Smoothing an Image with Photoshop

smooth effect with overlay and Gaussian Blur.

1. Find an image and open it up with Adobe Photoshop. I've chosen this (c) neopets.com image for this tutorial.

2. Duplicate the layer. You can do this by right clicking on your layer and selecting Duplicate Layer.

3. Go to Filter >> Blur >> Gaussian Blur.

4. Set your radius to about 4.0 (ish).

5. Hit OK and change your layers blending mode to Overlay.


6. Go to File >> Save For Web. That's all! You may consider using the blur tool to create some more special effects. Following the same steps you just read, this is what my results were:

Okay, so it doesn't look like it's that different. But it adds a nice effect to any picture, and I'd recommend doing this every time.
